So, you booked your engagement shoot—hell yeah. Now you’re probably wondering: What do we wear? How do we not look awkward? How do we get those magazine-worthy photos without feeling like we’re being weirdos?

Don’t stress. I’ve photographed dozens of couples all across Colorado, and I’ve got you. This guide walks you through outfits, locations, prepping for Colorado weather, and exactly how we’ll make your photos look cover-worthy.

Rule #1: Don’t Match, Coordinate

Listen—I know Pinterest in 2012 told us that white shirts and jeans were “timeless,” but no. Matching outfits make you look like a weird bridal ad from David’s Bridal, weird vibes. The trick? Coordinate, don’t match.

Think about colors, textures, and vibes that work together without being identical. If one of you is wearing a bold patterned dress, the other can wear something neutral that compliments it. If one of you is in sleek black, the other can soften it with a textured neutral. Together, it looks polished, effortless, and intentional.

Rule #2: Let Pinterest Do the Thinking

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel here. Create a Pinterest board, pin looks you love, and then literally copy them. Outfit formulas exist for a reason, they work.

Pinterest takes the guesswork out, and instead of spiraling in front of your closet, you’ll already know: “Cool, neutral blazer + silky slip dress = done.” Copy, paste, slay.

Rule #3: Comfort is Queen at Engagement Shoots

If you don’t feel comfortable, it will show in your photos. Period. Don’t wear something you’re constantly tugging at, sweating in, or worried about. If you can’t breathe in it, don’t wear it.

Your outfits should feel like an elevated version of your real style. That’s how we get photos that look high-end and feel like you. Alway keeps your engagement Location in mind as well! It would be weird if you were wearing shorts in the snow.

Rule #4: Two Outfits, Max

Most couples go for one formal outfit and one casual outfit, which gives us the best of both worlds. A sleek suit and dress? Fire. Cozy sweaters and boots? Also fire.

But here’s the deal: two outfits max. Any more and it eats into your time, your energy, and your photos.

Rule #5: You Just Have to Show Up

Here’s the secret sauce: it is not your job to know what to do with your hands. That’s mine. I’ll direct you, guide you, and make sure you look damn good. You don’t need to practice poses or feel like you’re auditioning for Next Top Model. Just show up, be yourselves, and let me handle the rest.

Choosing Your Engagement Shoot Location

Location sets the tone for your entire session, and the good news? It’s totally up to you. Want sweeping mountain views? We’ve got plenty. Downtown Denver city vibes? Done. A cozy cabin Airbnb that feels like your second home? Love that.

When you book with me, you’re not left to figure it out alone. I’ll send you a curated list of my favorite Colorado engagement photo locations. Think hidden mountain passes, dreamy alpine lakes, urban rooftops, and secret wildflower fields. I’ll also help you match your outfits to the vibe of the location so everything feels intentional and cohesive.

Bottom line: You pick the vibe, and I’ll help bring it to life.

Shooting in Colorado? Pack Smart.

Colorado is gorgeous, but she’s unpredictable. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s hailing sideways. That’s why I always recommend bringing:

  • Snacks (because hangry isn’t cute in photos)
  • Water (we’re at altitude, stay hydrated!)
  • Layers (mountain weather changes fast, and nothing ruins the vibe like being freezing in your dress)

Prepared couples are happy couples, and happy couples make killer photos.

How to Get Those Magazine-Worthy Shots

Spoiler: You can’t get Vogue-level engagement photos wearing matching polos and stiff jeans. If you want editorial, dramatic, unforgettable images—the kind that look like they belong in a magazine—you’ve got to show up ready. That means:

  • Outfits with texture, movement, and personality
  • Willingness to let go of perfection and lean into the moment
  • Trusting me to capture the real, unposed, in-between magic

That’s when your photos stop looking like “just engagement pictures” and start looking like art. This is your opportunity to be as extra as you want. I love and encourage EXTRA. Need more Inspo? Check out my Engagement Portfolio
