These engagement photos with Ali and Eric are some of my favorites.
The fall months in Boulder, Colorado are beautiful on their own, but when you add in a sunset dropping behind the mountains? The vibes were vibing for this sunset engagement session.
The Details
Eric and Ali wanted to capture both sides of their personalities with their engagement photos. The wanted pictures with the mountains, but they also wanted to capture some “date night” vibes. Boulder, Colorado was the perfect spot for both.
We started at a park in Boulder since it nestles right up to the Foothills. This shoot was in mid-October, so the fall colors were really popping off. Since we planned for a sunset engagement session, the colors looked even prettier than they usually do.
Once we lost the sun behind the mountains, we drove to downtown Boulder. Ali and Eric grabbed some pizza and ate on the curb outside the Boulder Theater. I loved playing around with the lighting and flash. If I say so myself, they looked REALLY fucking cool.
By planning for two completely different vibes, they were able to capture their more formal side, but also get photos that looked and felt more like them.
Must Knows
October is a crazy month for photography, so Ali, Eric, and I planned to do their sunset engagement session on a weekday. We only saw like two other photographers at the park, when we normally would’ve seen like 10 during the weekend. It was the move.
All of my engagement sessions are two hours, which is plenty of time for two outfits and two different locations, given they’re in reasonable distance from each other. Boulder Theater was about 20 minutes from the park, which worked perfectly.
Versatility is important when it comes to choosing your outfits and locations for engagement photos. I really encourage couples to try and get two completely different looks out of their pictures. Especially since you won’t know what you’ll like more until you see them! Ali ended up loving the formal photos for their invites and planned to use the mountain photos around their home.
If you have no idea what you want for your engagement photos, ask your photographer for help! They should be an expert on what works and what doesn’t. Eric and Ali were unsure of their vision when they first came to me. We did a visualization call together where I helped them decide on locations, time of day, and styling. I was happy to help make sure the vibes were on point so they didn’t show up in like a Nike t-shirt LMAO.
