A Guide to Eloping at Cathedral Rock

The scenery in Colorado always takes my breath away, but it’s refreshing to get away sometimes and photograph in other places.

Sedona, Arizona is known for all of its warms colors and stunning rock formations. But none are as stunning as Cathedral Rock in Sedona. Eloping at Cathedral Rock is not for the faint of heart, but the views are amazing and SO worth it.

Cathedral Rock elopements are for my couples who are willing to hike. It’s only about a mile, but the path is straight up and can be treacherous for people who aren’t used to regular hiking or outdoor activity. It’s also a really popular hiking spot, especially on weekends, so if you want some privacy I definitely recommend a sunrise or sunset elopement. The trail is dog friendly, so bring your pups if you want them to be part of your day!

I feel like it doesn’t need to be said, but summer in Arizona is crusty AF. While eloping early or late in the day can beat some of the heat, I really only recommend eloping at Cathedral Rock in the spring and winter months.

Permits

Cathedral Rock elopements don’t require a permit as of right now. Parking at the trailhead will cost you about $5, but that’s it! Just remember to Leave No Trace while you’re there.

While permits aren’t required, Arizona DOES require witnesses and an officiant to get married. At the elopement I photographed, my couple hired an officiant, and we lucked out by finding two people on the trail to sign as witnesses. It was a super cool experience for all of us!

How to Get There

I recommend flying into Phoenix and renting a car to drive out to Sedona. It’s about a two-hour drive, and the scenery along the way is gorgeous.

Where to Stay

Sedona is super, super touristy so there are plenty of options for lodging, especially in the central part of town. You guys know my vibe though – I always go for Airbnbs for a little more privacy. Sedona has some eccentric options that are unlike anything I’ve ever seen LOL.

What to Do

Sedona is a very spiritual town. It’s believed there is a presence of concentrated energy in specific areas among the red rock formations the town is known for. A lot of people come to find healing – you can read more about it here. It’s also a very touristy town, so you’ll find a lot of your “standard” tourist options for things to do. • Slide Rock Park – This is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon, but it has this super cool rock that functions as a water slide.
• Pink Jeep Tours – If you’re not up for hiking, these jeep tours are perfect for still being able to see the beautiful scenery.
• E-bike ride – Y’all know I love an e-bike ride. If you want something a little more active than taking in the sights from a Jeep, rent an e-bike! They’re so much fun and easy for everyone.
• Hot air balloon ride – I’ve always thought a hot air balloon ride would be epic, and what better place to do it than in beautiful Sedona.

What to Pack

For the most part, the days are hot in Sedona, but the mornings and evenings can actually get pretty chilly. Just like out in Colorado, make sure to pack layers. These are my “must haves” when packing for a trip to Arizona:

• Long pants

• Sturdy shoes or hiking boots
• Water sandals
• Windbreaker
• Sun hat
• Sunscreen
• Bug spray
