A common misconception about eloping is that you’ll lose all the special moments that are typically associated with large, traditional weddings.

Both types of weddings have their special moments, but I’ve found that my couples feel like they have more freedom with eloping. You can still incorporate special elopement moments without all the micromanaging from outside parties. To make your day extra memorable, try some of these special moments for your elopement.

A couple displays heirlooms as a special moment for their elopement.

Read letters from the most important people in your life.

Ask the important people in your life to write you and bae a letter to be read on your elopement day. This is a great way to incorporate your loved ones even though they aren’t there in person. I’ve had several couples whose parents wrote them a letter to read privately before saying “I do.”

Incorporate heirlooms.

Whether it’s rings from your grandmother or a piece of material worked into your attire, the special moment of “something borrowed” isn’t just for weddings! I know this seems like a typical tradition and you’re like, “Kenzie, wtf, traditions are so not our style.” Hear me out and try shifting your mindset. This is one way you can incorporate your family or sentimental items into your elopement to add a special element.

A special moment for your elopement can be sharing a first dance, like this couple in the mountains.

Share a first dance.

Bring a portable speaker or ask your photographer to bring one along. Pick a first dance song and share a special dance with the mountains as your backdrop at the end of your day. PLEASE make sure you download the song before you get up into the mountains. Service is shit up there.

Elopement days can go by so fast, and a first dance is a special moment for you and bae to soak in everything together. Being present is something I’m always reminding my couples of.

Wear what you want.

Your elopement day is not a day to try and be someone you’re not. If you don’t usually wear dresses, don’t wear a dress. If you feel most comfortable in a ball cap, wear one. If you’re not feeling white, don’t wear white. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and amazing.

Celebrate.

I think this is the most overlooked part about eloping because there’s not always anyone else except you and your boo. But don’t pass up a fun celebration as one of the special moments for your elopement! Bring some champagne, shooters of alcohol, a yummy dessert, or another favorite way to celebrate. Always avoid anything that will leave litter behind, like confetti, or anything that will harm wildlife. It’s best to play it safe and check area regulations before you plan anything.

Rent a sick getaway car.

We already know you saved a shit ton of money by eloping, so go all out on a killer ride to get you around Colorado! I love using Turo for affordable car rentals. If you’re coming during winter months, I highly recommend getting an SUV with four-wheel drive. Having a kick ass car will make you feel like a baddie – who doesn’t want to feel that way on their elopement day?!

Now that you have an idea of some special moments for your elopement, let’s choose an awesome location.
